The status of a property on January 1 each year is used to determine the property's value and exemption status FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. That means if a property owner has Homestead Exemption for 2014 and sells his property during 2014, his exemption will remain on the property for the entire year, and will be removed as of January 1, 2015. Although there will still be an exemption on the property during 2014, it is NOT the new owner's exemption. The new owner will need to file for the exemption for 2015, or let the exemption lapse if he intends to maintain his own exemption on another property.

If a property owner listed on our website owns more than one property with homestead exemption for a particular year, that does not necessarily mean he is committing Homestead Fraud.
